During the 11th and 12th centuries the Mossi tribe ruled the area until its
defeat by the Mali and Songhay empires. The French gained control in 1896.
It used to be known as Upper Volta. The country became independent in
1960 when a pro-French government was elected. Finally a coup in 1982
resulted in the current regime.
Thousands of migrant farmers travel to the Ivory Coast and Ghana for work.
Burkina Faso suffered from severe drought in the 1970s which resulted in
widespread famine. The country is very dependent on foreign aid.
